Detailed description

This is a continuation of the now-terminated Blood Frontier project.

Red Eclipse is a Free and Open Source game, using SDL and OpenGL which allows it to be ported to many platforms; you can download a package for Windows, Linux/BSD, Mac OSX, or grab a development copy from our Subversion repository and live on the bleeding edge.

The game is a single-player and multi-player first-person ego-shooter, built as a total conversion of Cube Engine 2, which lends itself toward a balanced gameplay, completely at the control of map makers, while maintaining a general theme of agility in a variety of environments. In a true open source by the people for the people nature, it tries to work closely with the gaming and open source communities to provide a better overall experience, taking all sorts of feedback from your average player, to your seasoned developer, aiming to create a story-driven game environment that is flexible, fun, easy to use, and pleasing to the eye.

Blood Frontier was terminated, Red Eclipse was created to continue the efforts of the project. The explanation behind which is as follows:

There was a split in opinion about what Acord wanted to do, and what the community and I wanted to do. Blood Frontier was Acord's project, and he owned the name and most of the assets; due to the game itself deviating so far from what he intended, tensions in the project continued to increase until there was nothing but anger on both sides of the fence.

Acord had very little time to dedicate to the project and as result it became something he loathed. Every time he played it he would pile on the hate and anger, most of the community would come to my defense to protect the ideas we had all developed together, and it became increasingly apparent that Acord was the odd one out on his own project.

I can see it from his point of view, he was usurped on his own idea, but in a way it was his own fault for starting an idea he couldn't personally follow through on. We all just continued making the game according to what was fun from our point of view, taking feedback from people in the community, and Acord believed it ruined his vision.

In the interests of ending ongoing hostilities between both parties, and saving the project, I resigned from Blood Frontier as Lead Developer and forked the game into Red Eclipse, which will essentially be a continuation of what Blood Frontier was before the split. Acord has since abandoned Blood Frontier, it will no longer be developed.

It's an unfortunate set of circumstances, but to continue doing this work I had to stage a mutiny to gain the creative freedom. Let's just all wish Acord the best for the future and continue on with Red Eclipse, which from now on will be a totally open source game with open assets (no more encumbered copyrighted works).

We've a long road ahead to replace all of Acord's content with free alternatives, and I hope the community will support me in this endeavor even more than they did with the previous project. Long live Red Eclipse.

No idea really, maybe he thinks we're trying to eclipse him/BF. To be honest, it took us three days of arguing to come up with the name, then favorito just said "Red Eclipse"; I liked the sci-fi sound of it, so it stuck. Acord is just trying to make us all look bad because he is upset things didn't work out, I wouldn't pay much attention to it.

Yeah, I do understand his side of the argument but he seems to be on his own in this ... feud. At least you saw it from both sides. I've really only seen Blood Frontier Beta 2 so I wouldn't know what it was like before.
It's funny, because he seems to think that everyone's ganging up on him. But from what I've seen/heard, nobody is ganging up on him and in fact he's just too angry for the community to cope with. But to be honest, I think I would be too if my project was changed that much - he shouldn't have allowed the community to play such an active part in its development if he wanted it to stay how he liked it.
It's a shame that Blood Frontier was abandoned, but oh well. I will be supporting Red Eclipse every step of the way. The Blood Frontier beta 2 looked hugely promising and if only the textures and models and things will change in future releases, I will very much be looking forward to playing it when I finally get a passable excuse for a computer.

I'd just like to say, I love the new name and the new direction of the game. I just got the SVN and I love it. I miss a lot of the old sounds though, such as the awesome PEW PEW PEW PEW of the laser rifle. Something else I would like is the option to change your crosshair in a menu. I have some nooby friends who cant get used to the fact that they have to use commands now. Plus, my usual command for changing the crosshair is not working. The game is great, and I even made a reduced violence mod for my younger friends. Just a funny little story, the day I told my friend about the game, he thought I said "Ready Clips" which he thought was a haircut place. It was very chaotic, me trying to talk about a cube 2 fps, and him trying to talk about haircuts. Nevertheless, I still love the new name and the new direction. (Loving the resize mode (: )

Just one question.

Has Red Eclipse been released yet? Because when I look at the files, it isn't there. Is there a problem with the file, or is it not released yet?

Sorry if I sound stupid for asking, I just need some mulitplayer action. :)

No, red eclipse is not released yet. You can download it if you know how to use an svn client. If not, just wait untill it is released. This thread will most likely be bumped or changed when Red eclipse will release.

Are you planning to add a particle system similar to that in Iron Fist?

If you haven't heard of it yet its another game with the cube 2 engine: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ironfistcube2/

It's not really playable yet but the particle effects look extremely good the explosions look SICK.

well to me the iron fist fire looks NOTICEABLY better. here a comparison:

Tried it and it looks very nice!
The playermodels really look awesome and so are the weapons!
To me it feels a bit slow, but probably because I'm just used to games like quakelive or sauerbraten :P. Probably just a matter of taste ;).

Can I ask what is the difference between bloodfrontier and red eclipse now? Because you still can see the set-up of blood frontier.

Anyways, very nice!

P.S.
Some maps still have problems with setting the depthmap right in a texture (like the map "ghost"). Maybe a small point to fix?

just one points of criticism

it requires too many votes to vote another map in the middle of a game. sometimes many people don't like a map wich leads to many people leave the server. vote should succeed if less than half of all players vote one map.

and where the hell does the game save the config file, its not in the game folder?

I know this asking a bit much, but..

In Red Eclipse, whenever you jump onto and immediately kick off a vertical surface, you often don't know what exactly you're jumping backwards into. Is there any way that the camera (and the playermodels) could be animated so that you do a backflip?

The new mapmusic + sound effects are epic! They add so much more feel to the game....they couldn't be any more perfect.

Campaign mode seems pretty fun, although i'm not sure if there was an objective or a second area of the map i had to proceed to, and not much seemed to happen after getting ~800 frags, lol. Can anyone clear that up, What am i meant to do in campaign mode?

Ah ok.
Always find it hard to aim in RE after a few days of not playing it, campaign seems like a fun way of practicing at the least.

I was wondering, are there any new time trial maps added to the game? I can't check right now, but always loved the idea behind that mode in past releases.

Just tried v1.2. Overall its awesome!

Pros:
+ I like "some" of the new music tracks.
+ the new HUD looks cool.
+ better server filters.
+ new Pistol model.
+ the Rifle is even greater now!

Cons:
- too bad that gameplay changed again. Now the player doesn't jump as high as before :(
- new Player skin. The new player skin is too gray/white. On some maps its hard to distinguish players from the walls. The previous skin was better IMO, at least one could see some glowing colors in the far distance.
- the weapons are unbalanced:

the pistol's primary fire is too damn fast/powerful making its secondary fire useless.
the SMG is too weak IMO, specially the secondary fire. Its hard to kill anything with it.

- maps still look ugly. Not trolling but IMHO Blood Frontier had better looking maps.

Moreover, the version numbers feels like it should be: 0.2 instead of 1.2 (compared to other FOSS games). Overall, Red Eclipse is a great game but it's still far from perfect.
Anyway, GG & 10 points!

Try facing vertically up and using the impulse boost at the peak of your jump, you typically get boosted in the direction you are facing. That might help with the lack of the crouch/jump from the last release.

The player skin, i think you can change the colour (grey, for instagib modes) somehow, i forgot which command it was however. If you play with shaders on, the playermodels should appear grey with highlight/tint of the colour the player selected in their profile settings.

My opinion on the pistol, it might be powerful/fast but i have a hard time keeping a good aim when spamming that thing lol, its rare if i hit a single bullet on a moving player at a distance. I think the secondary is decent for close-range. The SMG is fine i suppose, i don't have much problem using it, but the secondary does seem hard to hit people unless you are at close range (it might be this way for the reason the secondary slows down players momentarily).

The maps aren't bad, they are all playable (depending on the mode of course) and they look pretty cool. I think one of the people who worked on blood frontier copyrighted their maps (if you're suggesting some maps are missing) so they can't be used in RE due to the license, i read that somewhere on the RE forum not long ago.

About the player skins... I think "playerovertone" and "playerundertone" are what you're looking for. I usually play w/ "playerovertone" set to 7 (personal color blended w/ team color in teamplay) and "playerundertone" set to 0 (grey, or Team Neutral's color)
