I'm sure you will be able to load them, but I can't confirm if they will animate. We could load a smd mek player model in Red Eclipse and Sauerbraten. It would texture and render properly but not animate. I never knew if it was the config was screwed up or whether the engine doesn't support animation of smd. Octaforge may support them. if anyone knows the answer I would love to know, smd exporters generally seem more robust. The config file was like this:
