In game recorder?

As some of you may know, I have been working on an extensive campaign for Sauerbraten (which has been drastically set back by college), and I want to be able to record scenes from the game to show to my friends and maybe even post on Facebook. I heard a rumor a while back that there was an in-game video recorder. Is this true? I know about the ability to export screenshots, and thats not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for actual video recording. I decided I should check up on the rumor first before purchasing capture software. Thanks in advance!

Why purchase software? Who buys Fraps anyway? =P

Follow SheeEttin's link or follow the instructions of demo recording so you can "recreate" the conditions anytime for you to take multiple shots from different angles. There is no "movie-control" over demos though, so each time you'd have to start it from the beginning.

Thanks for the help! but now I've run into another problem. When searching for my recorded video, I could not find the file anywhere on my computer. As a matter of fact, all of my level files except the first one, Awakening, are missing from the packages/base file. It seems I can only access these files from within the program. Any help on this?

Still no sign of the files. i've looked everyone on my computer, even in the directories that I have set aside for IronFist, Red Eclipse, SE 12.6, and even the main Sauerbraten directory. It's strange, since I can still access in game, yet I'm not able to find the .OGZs or .CFGs physically.

another thing is i had win vista, and it did something of the same, it started losing file, but they were there (like certain pictures, in windows explorer i couldn't find them, but in blender or in windows movie maker i could,the best way to fix that is to get the map in-game, and re-save it, and attempt to delete the old file)

another possibility is that you could have made it a hidden file (don't ask me how that happens, some people screw things up without thinking) and if none of that works. then of course what afro had said might work (i would start with afros first, then use my ideas)

Another way different to Afro's is to press Win+R & type "%APPDATA%/sauerbraten" (no quotes) & press Enter.

Afro, You are certainly my hero. I would never have thought to look in compatibility files, and hence, would have never found those files.

Sure no problem! Im going to take a couple other short clips of different scenes in my campaign and edit them together to try to create a sort of "trailer" for my game... I'm mainly doing this for fun and to show my friends, but I don't mind showing it off :)

I think it should be made clear that Sauerbraten provides two means for recording a sequence of events, first of course there is the demo recording functionality, which occurs server side (though the server could be a local one as in the case of single player), and must be played back inside Sauerbraten. There is also the ability to actually record video inside Sauerbraten, which basically scales and saves frames from your computers rendering to a specified video file, which you can then edit/play as you would any other video. Both of these are covered at the page that SheeEttin posted.

Hint: Almost any video task in Sauerbraten can be accomplished using a combination of the demo functionality and the video recording. Even though video recording is severely limited by your machines specs, you can save a demo, load the demo, use /gamespeed 10 to slow the demo playback down and use a lower movie_fps so as to allow larger resolution frames than your computer would normally support. Then you can use video editing software to speed the video back up, and obtain ubber smooth high res video.

I did this several times now and noticed that the "recorder" crashes after a while. Sometimes even after 5 seconds...

sauer video output is basically this: take everything from your screen and put it into a file uncompressed at a large rate per second. system specs that affect this could be gfx card, hard drive space/speed, and the fps you choose to use.

I have had success using that combination both on my new fast machine and an old crappy one, so perhaps there is some other issue. You have to use somewhat sane values since the video is uncompressed, especially if your harddrive write speed is slower, which I think is the limitation on many systems, since I've noticed that the recording will often go until the harddrive buffer is full then choke.

I've tried once creating a trickjump video with some trickumps in it (wich weren't avaible yet that time, something like 2 years ago), but somehow, I always were having problems wich "filters" or something like that.
The endresult of my movie always was a pixelated, very strange coloured vid, wich only had like 10fps a second.

My solution to this:
I just made a screenshot script wich takes every second 40 screenshots in .bmp format (adjustable by the "screenshotformat" command, wich can set to .bmp (0) .tga (1) and .png (2). In trooper edition it was possible to save screenshots also as .jpg format, but has been taken out due the crashing of the engine. I don't know why)...
Works great, adjustable per frame, only doesn't record sounds, but that can be ripped of the .avi file. Somehow on this way "moviemaker" programs aren't having any trouble rendering it properly.

It can handle insane detail as well and is just a simple script.

I'm sorry to put it like this, but never managed to get the "loop"-command working, neither the "while"-command. Any help please?
Do me a favor and please don't guide me to the tutorials on cube wiki, since I already tried them :S.

loop V N body

Loops the specified body.

V = the alias used as counter	
N = the amount of loops	
body = the body to execute on each iteration

This command sets the alias you choose, as first argument, from 0 to N-1 for every iteration.
Example:

loop i 10 [ echo $i ]

I already tried that, and it makes the engine crash when you would make 100 loops for taking screenshots.
Tried with just 1 or 2, no screenshots are getting written at all...

That the engine crashes is probably just because it wants to make that 100 loops in 1 single second?

Thanks very much for the offer, but like 75% of the trickjumps in the video I was making some years ago, is already on youtube :S. So no need anymore to create it (even tough my intention of the movie was to show what kind of trickjumps are possible in Sauerbraten on official maps, unlike most of the trickjumps videos on youtube).

i could try capturing it if you have some sort of demo. I tried recording a reissen trickjump video and i was able to convert it to a decent quality with little to none visible pixels and 30 fps ^^
