What good could MS paint possibly do? None.

GIMP's interface is confusing for unexperienced users. a good program for starters in Paint.NET.

pdn is paint.net specific. i have no idea whether paint.net actually work on linux. plus pdn is a format of multiple layers, so you couldn't use it for textures ingame unless merged

i hope you ever heard of blue painted wood? :P

btw, because all games on cube engine 2 doesnt have any realistic specifics, it doesnt matter if blue wood would only be on the greek island...

If you want to make a greek island, here are some instructions that would be useful:

1. Create a hill in the center. The houses are usually built on slopes and foothills. Also, there is usually a small church at the top of the hill, which in greek is called ''εξωκλήσι''.

2. Create narrow streets. In the Greek islands, the houses are almost united each other.

3. Create a port. A small harbor, where you can swim.
Of course, this depends on the size of the island.

4. Remember: apart from the blue wood, that you asked for in quadropolis, basic color is white (whitewashed stone). This is due to high temperature in the islands (the darker color absorbs more heat than the white color).

i think when it comes to gameplay the hints on here are a better:
dont make square houses. cut the edge to a diagonal side, so its more tactical (its much more fun to play with too, take as example the geometry in fanatic_quake). of course its not the meaning you do this on every house you see, but on a place where to roads/paths/streets cross each other, its very effective.
make pretty much platforms on different heights, but still subtle accessable (as example, using stairs, ladders, crates, etc).
remember, sauerbraten IS NOT a game where you should focus on reality when it comes to a gameplay map, so the geometry doesnt has to be realistic to the playermodels (as example, making everything bigger then in reality, like if your a dwarf running on islands increases the flow most times on maps. if you dont like this and still want everything more realistic, even tough sauerbraten isnt the right game for it, then make sure buildings with a small doorway arent accessable, or enlarge the doorway on a subtle way).
p.s. creating small paths is a bad idea because of the flow. maybe just a few to cut of main streets isnt bad, but dont make the mainstreets/path narrow.
the idea of swimming in a port isnt very smart, just because it slows down the gameplay. this only could be done if there has been thought a lot about it and been created carefully with a purpose.
