I've finally got the Linux version of Sauerbraten and it works great, I've seen the FPS go up to 200 on high quality settings. However, ten to fifteen minutes into the game it crashes. It usually goes windowed and refuses to respond, but it does a lot of unpredictable things- sometimes is spontaneously quits, and it once completely logged me off. I'm sure the crashes occur independent of my input- it's crashed when I'm standing still and when I'm computing lightmaps. It also crashes in between songs. This can get extremely annoying, especially when I'm playing multiplayer. I do have a few clues, however:

-every time I kill the process my wifi signal is low.

-When the error causes it to spontaneously quit, the screen is out of proportion- I can't reach the bottom of the screen with my mouse.

-I was on the map Caves for about a half hour and it didn't crash.

I have absolutely no clue why this happens. If you guys could help me out that would be great; otherwise, I guess I can wait for the Linux Trooper Edition.

Which version do you have then ?

The older version- maybe I downloaded it wrong because it has a bunch of Trooper files it can't access.

OK - i have linux too ....

if your game stuck - I know this problem ... its a BIG problem and i dont know how to fix it ;(
i know its starting when : 1. the cfg files stuck and stop to read (to refresh it - just quit the game - then enter again)
, 2. when there are MANY mixed and tinny lights everywhere 3. when you are in a verry tinny map - DONT LOAD A VERRY HUGE MAP WITH MANY THINGS !
4. dont load too many maps so fast ! its can to "hit" the files in "packages/base" folder
on these ways you can be safe ( i think :S )

hmmm ...
maybe you didnt downloaded ALL the files - and it is laggy ...
try to download the game again : then tell me what ...

It may or may not be this issue, which is only applicable to ATI hardware & Cataylst drivers. (Protip: bug reports go in the bug report thread on the Cube 2 forum, though a simple "it crashes sometimes" is less than helpful.)
If that IS the cause, you may consider backporting this SVN commit, which I believe is eihrul's "more invasive fix" to your installation and compiling.

Oh, and you ARE using the Magic SysRq key, correct? ;)

Okay, I tried reinstalling it. It still crashes but a lot less frequently, like every 45 minutes or so. I think I can live with that. Thanks for the working download!

Oh, and by the way, I use a virtual terminal (f5), type "ps axu |grep sauer" and kill the process. I'm not experienced with the SysRq key yet.

Well, if it's not locking up the whole system, you don't want to use the SysRq key anyway. :P

I've had some VERY weird things happen when I do NOT shut off screensaver MANUALLY - somehow the SDL usage of Sauerbraten (and other cube-engine games) seems to irritate a slew of linux distros. Try turning off your screensaver by hand before running the game - does the problem persist?

The screensaver thing worked... turned out it was set for the same time before and after the switch minutes but it takes a pretty long time for stuff to load in the old version
