I think all of these ideas are excellent. Getting community feedback on them is a good idea.

uhm. avatars?

when i say "Avatars" I mean "Avatars", those tall blue ppl living on PanDAFUQ! I mean a classical community Avatar, a picture attached to your profile and shown in every post/reply you make.

for the pageload, well, there are several reasons for complaining about it:

1- too much http requests.
2- no cache optimization.
3- random downloading of pictures wich aren't really in the page [check it, it happens for real].
4- bad managment of pictures: on nodes you have a 640*480 image, but on the right bar, where you have recent post, that little image is (average) 320*240, while you see it [forced by inline style] only 160px width: it's a waste, not that huge, but fixing it will let us have avatars without increasing pageload.
5- since it's a worlwide community maybe we should manage to have a CDN hosting plan. With it no one will ever complain again.

Avatars aren't supposed to be more than 150x150, with a good server side managment pictures uploaded by users are auto-cutted straight to that and littler sizes, such as 20x20, for implementation in very little situations, like lists. For faster download all avatars in the page can be previously packed in one single image, all via php, and it means just one http request instead of one for each user.
It's not science fiction.

for 4. : The images in the sidebar - when you upload a picture to your nodes server saves it as it is and 1/2 of its size, the sidebar uses the littler images in order to have a lower pageload, and this is good, but, the code forces those images to be even littler, at a fixed width of 160px, while most of them are around 320*240, here lays the waste, to fix it the server should save the images at 160*auto right after the upload, so basically it creates 3 pictures from one, just different sizes. Each of this waste can be turned in 1, 2 or even 4 avatars, if properly sized around 50*50.

for the layout well, yes, some very little changes are required. the best option we have [imo] is to place the avatar right before the nickname in every post, at a very little size like 30*30 or even less, this just to not change the layout so much.

the playermodel pics are a nice idea, but i'd like real avatars more..

@skiingpenguins: we have cloudflare? good to know but there are still many things to fix, CDN provides just less lag..

I wouldn't mind a user-icon of one of the Sauer characters, but to be thorough probably should include all the characters from all of the popular Cube-based games.
