Detailed description

NOTE: YOU WILL NEED THE LATEST CVS VERSION OF SAUERBRATEN AS OF MARCH 30, 2007 FOR THIS TO WORK.

I started this a few weeks back and here is the results. A good amount of work went into this map to get it to where it is and I'm still not entirely certain that I am ready to call it 100% done. As far as I am aware, this is one of, if not the first Sauerbraten map to feature sounds through out the map. So if you play with the music cranked all the way up try playing with it on a 30 or so or even turned completely off and run around the map to see AND hear what it has to offer so far. This map supports Capture mode. I hope everyone has as much fun playing this as I had in making it.

Why don't you just release this compatible with GUI Edition?
This map is so great that everbody will download the newer version from CVS. And this only helps to fragment the multiplayer community IMO. :(

If you would use the GUI Edition you would make it a lot easier for everybody to play this map. Not everybody may have the knowledge to download from cvs and use (compile) it.

And IMO there are to much people already using newer versions in MULTIPLAYER. They don't seem to know that this is wrong. Happened multiple times that one /sendmap only to shut down others clients, because they had an older version. Or playing on a map that was already modified for next release or new physics. Some people clearly lack the responsibility that they only should use this in singleplayer.
Sorry, I couldn't hold to write about it this time. Please don't give reasons to mix versions. :P

Btw: It is still possible to 'port' a map made with the current Sauerbraten CVS version back to the GUI edition.
You just have to change one line of source code (CVS) and recompile. And remove all sound entities of course.

One possibility is to change worldio.cpp line 241:
hdr.version = MAPVERSION; -> hdr.version = 21;
Then compile, run the program and save the map with a new name. This saved map can be loaded in GUI edition.
I don't know how long this is still possible. The only things changed in the new mapformat are new entity types. Your maps just shouldn't have them. If more things are changed this won't work.

Sure my comment has to do something with this map. Although I over exaggerated a bit. :P
Just wanted to point out a case that seems to be forgotten sometimes (IMHO).
Maybe I should have added more smilies? That would have made my friendly intention more clear.
(Nobody forces you to answer rhetorical questions. But you could think about them. :)

Alot of us are using CVS editions because we are:

a) testing the engine for bugs, and new features.
b) making use of the new features so that maps that demonstrate the newest features may be included for the next release.
c) enjoying being on the cutting edge.
d) developing with the engine ourselves.

As for having to "change one line of source code", that is not correct. Quite a bit more than just entities have changed, and even then, the entity indexes have changed, all you would get is a map that doesn't work in either (all the entities would be skewed by 2 in this case).

It's not so simple to backport, but it is easy for those wanting to test a map which uses the "latest and greatest" features to checkout the CVS version. Believe me, I've tried all this before.

Heh, I never said you shouldn't check out the latest version from CVS.
If you know what you are doing, everything is all right.
I somehow know what open source development should be about. :)

It was just bugging me(!) that development is moved into a 'user space' here (Quadropolis).
A place where 'normal' users can download maps. Easy download, no extra work. No possbility to 'hurt' your-self/system because you need to use (maybe) unstable stuff.
The 'normal' user wants the 'freeware game Sauerbraten' and doesn't care about the 'open source project Sauerbraten'.

Just wanted to show my point of view on mixing stable/unstable to the author here.
I am fully aware that I'm with the minority thinking that way. I didn't expect an answer and didn't want to start a discussion. :(

But ok, you are right about the map conversion. Sorry my fault. I'm not known for programming skills anyway. :P
Although it works for level geometry and the 'basic' entities like lights and playerstarts.
With three lines (two lines decrementing the entity number before saving) it should work.
Better: Use stable version in the first place. :D

Well, it seems to be a case of size does matter;
I couldn't upload the 2.2 MB file (BTW - fixed the paths according to How-To Package) via the webinterface,
but a smaller file of the same name and then ftp-overwriting with the true file fixed it.

this is perhaps the best level I have seen to date from anyone who has worked on this project. not only does it look like a quality production from circa 2003, the environmental sounds are awesome and add a wonderful level of detail.

i flooded the level and it looked great peering through the glass at water.

some of the level could use a little water!

all this level really needs is some working "rapid opening doors".

it would be nice to see a level in 2x cube mapping. if you fiddle with the camera and some related drawing variables, you can easily double the polygons in the cube map for even greater detail on these architectural elements.

i think another great thing about this level are the texture maps -- some old some new -- but came together well created a very nice and detailed world. if the lightmapping just had pulse, blink and fade this level would be awesome.

If you know what IRC is then please come into the #sauerbraten channel on irc.quakenet.org... There are many people in there who can help you with getting CVS running and it doesn't take a whole lot of time to get it working either. If you don't know what IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is and you have Firefox, I would suggest looking up an add-on called Chatzilla.

good map, with doors maybe will be more interesting.
when you fall and death you continue falling into nowhere, you can fix it.

Wow, that´s an amazing map ! I love everything in your map: Textures, lighting, layout, sounds (awesome !)...

Played it only in capture online yet, but i´m sure it´s big fun in ffa and probably insta, too.

pure 5/5, looks just perfect.

What is CVS????? Why can't this map just work natively with the spring edition?

This map does work with the spring edition, it is actually included with the spring edition so there is no need to download it from this website.

As for what CVS is, it is what the developers use to add features to sauerbraten. Every once and a while they take the CVS and release it as a new version of sauerbraten. The Spring Edition is actually the CVS at the time this map was posted...
