Sauerworld Remake Mapping Challenge

Dear mapper,

Are you in for some more mapping action? Then sign up for the first Sauerworld Mapping Challenge: Remake a map!

For this edition, the challenge is to make your best remake of an FPS map of your choosing. The map can be from Quake, Counter Strike, or any game you can think of other than Sauer, as long as it is a remake of an already existing map. So, do you want more information? Then read on and sign up here.

You are allowed to sign up until the 28th of March 2015 0:00 GMT. Any entries which sign in after that date are still allowed to participate but can expect a penalty during the voting period.
The challenge starts on the 29th of March 2015 at 0:00 GMT and ends on the 10th of May 2015 0:00 GMT.

Im going to participate, im just deciding with my partner what map to remake, he has a lot of suggestions :) in some days i will sign up.

Remove the word 'remake' and I'll gladly participate. Why remake maps.. it just shows the Sauer community lacks originality.

In fact I suggest to make it climate based mapping challenge. Most of Sauer maps are all the same, basic pit, square design, maybe some rain or snow to add an effect. But that's it, just an effect..
How about a challenge such as a forest, tundra, mountains, desert, underwater.

That's what your mapping challenge should be: make you believe you're somewhere you're not. Just remaking maps from other games is just gonna bring others to the conclusion: clone.
You've gotta think, what if someone from Halo comes over, sees Halo maps, simply say clone and leave. There's one potential contributor, vanished. Now, should they come from Halo, and see Halo-themed maps that are original as far as layout goes, it might draw their attention to check it all out, and maybe become active within the community.

Sui, remaking maps sucks. Where's the sense of accomplishment? 'Oh I duped this map almost perfectly!' That's what you did exactly, you duped it. Would you rather say that or, 'I took this maps theme and made my own great map' Emphasis on 'my own'. You get a better feeling of accomplishment. What are people gonna do when the mapping challenge is over.. 'Oh yeah, I participate so the community knows I'm still alive'. How about make it so when the challenge is over, people want to keep making new maps because of the (assumingly) positive feedback they get from --their own, original-- map. Nobody likes to hear their map called a clone, even if they intentionally make it a clone map.

Now, taking the theme from other games, and translating it into an original layout in Sauer, and adding the effect that you're in x game even though the map doesn't even exist for said game, that's a better mapping challenge. It brings original content, it brings a more positive atmosphere 'what's he gonna make next?' instead of 'what's he gonna clone next...'. I'm merely speaking from my side of the page, I prefer original while others may appreciate clones.

TL;DR ::
How about climate/terrain based mapping challenge.
Layouts should be required to be original for the challenge.

As a side note: 150k wtr max? Come on Sui, this is 2015. Graphics cards are better now. 250-300k should be the max.

What about remakes of sauerbraten maps which were originally remakes from some other game? :P

How is it a challenge if it's easy? It's merely whoever plagiarizes the best. And that's the result, a base of plagiarized maps. Where's that 'one map that nobody ever thought of before', the map that stands out, the map that drops jaws, you know. Resulting comments will simply be 'nice dupe' 'I shoulda done that one' 'what other maps can I (steal) use'? Instead of 'damn, nice concept' or 'this could be the new venice! (or other popular maps)'.

Basically the message I'm receiving is 'Nope, it's gotta be Suis way, always gotta be Suis way.' I can't argue much there, since it's your competition, but still. You're always posting feedback to other's nodes, and they accept it. Why don't you return the favor for once, if not this competition (more than likely not, caus' jus' gotsa be saucijzerz way), then perhaps your next competition. Your past competitions had decent goals, the SP challenge brought some decent maps, good job there.

Perhaps try something new as well: 2 competitions at once. One for the current, and the other as a concept challenge. (concept as in, bring something new to sauer, maps that stand out, in a good way, are reasonable, and playable.)

Your comment suggests you want the challenge to be easy, that's ideal for attracting participants, but it voids the concept of a challenge. And since already-created maps are involved, I suggest you rename it to Plagiarism Competition. :D

No discussion about the concept of the challenge. I'm open for slight changes but no twists. If you wanted another "way", then you had enough time to do so.

I'll enter this, but expect to not have really any sort of product at the end (I don't think i've done anything mapping-related for more than a year)

Hmm, now what bizarre, obscure game should I pull a map from? And it probably won't be an FPS, because that's too easy.

Side question: How about sprucing up a map from Cube 1? There's some maps that were pretty nice, but got left behind and forgotten.

As you can import them also; it's not the intention to do so. However; if you can prove you're rebuilding it completely from scratch (including an own cfg and so); then it seems fair.

As a notification; be sure to also make an own topic before 29 March 2015 which is named as:
RMC: [name_of_map]

When the challenge officially started, do the next couple of things:
– Be sure you’ve included everything stated at the header of Participation.
– Post the progression of your map weekly (no real deadline on that though).
