His features, such as the Recent Content view over to the right side, are now very easily created with the Views module in Drupal 7. A lot of the custom or 3rd party modules in quadropolis are now included as basic functionality in Drupal. By using a whole new site instead of upgrading, one can avoid any issues with the current site.

What's wrong with Javascript?

Edit: I went through and counted how many javascript files both sites use, quad uses around 5, mine uses around 9. Though, that is to be expected since there's an 8 year different between the site versions. However, if it is the download time youre worried about, the new drupal has a nice cache thing for css and js

Javascript does not mix well with dial-up, but 9 is fine.

JavaScript works also offline. If you have problems with JavaScript, you don't have them b/c of your connection.

It's not that it doesn't work, it's the loading time. Javascript takes forever to load on slow connections. I know it sounds crazy, but if you have extremely slow internet you'd understand.

There are ways to block that stuff, though.

I explicitly noted that Google Analytics obeys the DoNotTrack header. If you are so against tracking (really, the government doesnt care how you use quad) please use a browser extension.

Ofc it's possible to block everything, the question is which benefits you expect from Google Analytics? And what can you do with Google what you can't do with Piwik?

I have GA set up on a couple sites already, I am already familiar with the interface. GA doesn't need me to fiddle with any more SQL either (yuck.)

I don't think I need to explain the benefits of analytics to you since you're already suggesting alternate software to do it.

Opt-out is not user-friendly, it patronizes. The only convenience here seems being "already familiar with the interface" + for Google ofc, gaining a little more power over us... =P

My suggestion: opt-out of GA completely or no upgrade and let's finally agree on an idea for a self-made (or IgC's WordPress) quadro!

to be perfectly honest, it is not your choice whether the site uses Google Analytics. You do however have the choice of not using the site.

There is no such thing as "Anonymized" since your browser would automatically sideload from their servers. And they do use it to track your interests and behavior. That's how they earn their money: customized ads. =P

Since the beginning of quadro they don't know if you're ranting on another thread while browsing porn. Nor do any other websites. Why should they now?

Where Google surely does a lot for the benefit of mankind, Android and what not... many believe it does not need to be everywhere. I personally enjoy coming here because this is one of those tiny splinters left on the web, that is different, not facebooked and twittered, where I don't get analyzed and benchmarked (except by a bunch of wild mods =P) but where I'm able to be creative and freely say and think, pseudonymously, what I want.

It's not that they find out who you are, where you live etc. They do just collect statistics about how ppl use your website so that you can learn what's good and how and where to improve. Just like when you make a map and test it with friends.

So we can already track your IP. And OC, block it or, most nicely, spot it to some antispam service like Akismet used by millions of website all around the globe.
Knowing someone's IP isn't really knowing who he is. You still don't have your IP marked on your face, do you?

And if you care about your privacy (dunno why) you should really go for update because the security of this install is lower than .. oh come on. even a kid can hack this.

Sure. Are you a webdesigner? I think no. You should just thank for having so many ppl happy to give the community a real help and still take care about what you think. But there are limits.

Because the one-man-cms is the most stupid idea ever. How do you plan to keep it updated? It's 2014. The good things are already here, there is no reason to make something yourself wich will never be better than its competitors. Wordpress is ruling the web because it is supported by a community of millions of ppl who works on it adding features, fixing bugs and updating every part of its core. Every day. Always. How can you compete?
And OC, it's the same for services like GA. It's already here, it works fine and it has all the features you'd need.

And all this tools are offered for free.

Mhmm. Even this Drupal version has a tracking builtin. Like how me, a moderator, can see that Zombie's IP on Sunday when they logged out was 95.130.*.*** (censored for their "protection") despite being 77.95.2**.*** when they logged in, under an hour before.

I can talk ofc only for myself, but for me it's a big different if the website itself I requested tracks me and have my data or a third party company (which are also forced to work with

I don't see any point why you don't just setup Piwik. It's pretty easy, customizable, extendable, open source and make you independence. There are also enough stories around where users got excluded from the service without any obvious reason...

@skiingpenguins It might be -faster setup- for you if you already used GA serveral times. But Piwik is seriously damn easy. Upload files, enter DB Connection data one time and insert the tracking code into the page, the end. What did you mean with "fiddle with SQL"? You don't have to.

You're not going to convince me to use Piwik. Google Analytics is already set up on the new site, and it works. You have the right to use a DNT header as well as the various browser plugins available to block GA. You are also given the right to abstain from using the site. End of discussion.

That there are plugins to disable GA (which is a statistical tool for site owners) already suggests that there have to be downsides:

You once showed me a 30kb per-page mod of WordPress. There are dial-up users on quadro that would benefit from that, it would also safe a lot of traffic. By custom I meant what you did with that... it's just an idea... There are also nice smartphone-apps for WordPress =)

As this is an opinion poll I just wanted to give you my opinion. Ofc I'm also pro updating with new features and as long as GA is optional, at least in some users opinions, it shouldn't be in it. All I'm suggesting is: its privacy downsides don't weight up knowing where your few quadrosurfers click, especially if there are alternatives.

An inexperienced user does not have these plugins, and probably doesn't know about potential privacy issues.

The standard should be that you opt-in (aka: want to be tracked) not that you have to tell someone that you like to keep your privacy.

I'll collapse here my answer:

There is nothing wich actually supports your logic. Simply nothing. You ask ppl to stop using a very usefull tool because of what? Privacy? Go read about privacy laws on the internet. Google Analytics doesn't actually invade your privacy in any fucking way. It's all about you, you you you you. Wanna know the truth? Nobody cares about YOU. There is no interest in knowing the behaviour of single users. Datas are useful just in form of huge groups of ppl wich means statistics, not your privacy.
Statistics =/= your privacy.
AND, in any case, Google doesn't sells Analytics datas [like FB i.e.], they're stored for a limited time period for the ONLY use of the webmaster who owns the site, in other words, the only person who really cares about that datas, who, in the end, makes all this in order to give YOU a better tool to criticize his work.

Why do tools for stopping GA exists? Because there are stupid ppl around here who actually thinks G.A. is evil and in the meanwhile posts their pictures on Facebook wich has the full rights to re-sell all their contents. Much things just exists. It's a big world, no much explanations here in the end. There is war outside there, you know? Lots of ppl die every day while you complain about your privacy on a website made to let you share your things with your friend.
