multi-player bot / NPC?

Hello. I discovered Sauerbraten awhile back; nice to see ongoing progress. I'm more interested in the 3D engine for future projects, but my son is interested in gaming.

I setup a server on my Mac and we were able to connect and play locally. I've also done the single-player bot match, and joined some open games. But, I'm a terrible gamer so don't want to let down a team of real players!

What we'd really like is people (he and I) vs. bots. I looked around the documentation and forums and didn't see this option; have I missed something? There's not much info about bots / NPC.

Insert adds a bot of random skill and Delete removes it (always the last one added).

There is also the "Bot Match" button in the main menu GUI which should allow you to lazily pick their skill range, amount, mode and map to start.

you can use /setteam clientnumber teamname to assign bots to a team all by themselves. for example, to assign Bot[128] to team evil, you would type /setteam 128 evil

Thanks for the prompt replies! With your tip, I tried addbot ... but I don't see any bots. I press tab -- should they show up there? Do I have to find a map that already has waypoints -- or should I assume that most do? Any specific map I should try? Or any specific mode? I've tried several modes (e.g. cfg and not) ... despite the docs I'm not completely clear on the subtle differences. (That probably requires more gaming experience and/or having played cube2 more.)

Other than holding tab, is there a different way to see the bots? I did try setting botlimit just in case.

As for setteam, how do I get the clientnumber of a bot? (Maybe that will be clear once I can actually add them.)

By the way, I'm sure that I'm on my local server; I got there via lanconnect (as did my son), and the name is correct when I hold tab.

To see client numbers when you hit tab simply type, /getclientnum 1.
Bots will always have a fairly high client number.

As for why the bots wouldn't show up for you, I'm not sure.
The Insert key by default is bound to /addbot. Try hitting insert during a regular game instead of typing the command and see what happens. The delete key will remove a bot. Just be sure you are not in edit mode at the time. ;)

The bots should work for any multiplayer game mode as far as I know.

Since he's playing on a server, my bet is that he hasn't claimed master and thus is not allowed to add/remove bots.

Use /setmaster 1 to claim master, and /setmaster 0 to relinquish.

There are also mastermodes you can change to control the server's behavior with votes and connections.

/mastermode 0 is Open. Everyone connects freely but people have to vote for a map.
/mastermode 1 is Veto. Everyone connects freely but people can change maps whenever they want without consent.
/mastermode 2 is Locked. Everyone connecting will become a spectator, and people playing will have to vote for a map. The master can freely force a map of his choice.
/mastermode 3 is Private. No other people can join the server while this mode is active. Players have to vote for a map. The master can force a map.

That was it! I forgot to claim master. (Too bad there's no error msg...)

Now: can I make the monsters slower and more deliberate? Even with "skill 1" and "addbot 1", the monsters jump and run in circles etc. very quickly.

Nope, the skill range dictates how hard they are to play against, not how fast they move.
For the average newbie, the bot skill range is 60-70, intermidiate players from 70-85 and professionals from 85-100.

And for professional killing machines like myself, ( not to gloat ) a quick edit to the source to raise the skill to 300 is sufficient. :)

When having a bot on skill 300, is it able to shoot through walls also or what =P? I thought having a bot on maximum skill, also has an accuracy of (almost?) 100%.

When I go into Campaign, the monsters start very weak -- and even after I clear a few, the bigger ones aren't "twitchy" ... they don't run and jump like crazy. Mostly they attack me straight on.

I want something similar in multi-player, e.g. "army of two" -- me and my son as a team against the monsters. Any thoughts?

Aha. I thought Monsters and Bots were (or should/could be) the same -- i.e. both are NPCs. I guess that explains part of why I was confused by the documentation.

Nope they aren't. Bots use waypoints to navigate through a map, while monsters just run as close to you as they can get (regardless of any obstacles). Another (major) difference is bots won't stop shooting when being hit, while monsters clearly do.
You can change the speed of play by the command gamespeed 100, where 10 is minimum, 1000 is maximum. But beware, it only works in singleplayer (doesn't matter against monsters or bots).

You could probably edit the source to make ALL players slower...but I don't know if you still want to be super-fast or not...

If anybody knows how to make bots slower in Red Eclipse, let me know!

edit - Never mind...I can use the variables. Duh.
