You need the SVN verision of sauerbraten - and if you get it, there is no need to extra download it as the map is already included.

here comes "piazzetta" (italian for "little square"). again night-themed. with the fullbright ogros dark maps are just so convenient for the eye :-)

well, just take a look at it. it is again meant to be for all modes and from 2-16 players which requires for compromises. so please, don't be too harsh. thinking in terms of an iCTF 8v8 and a 1v1 ffa at the same time makes perfect solutions hard to find. nevertheless i think you might like it. there will definitively be some bugs to find and stuff you may not like perfectly. tell me, im really glad if you let me know. as usual i will give it a revision in a couple of weeks and so far (i.e. with the other maps before) almost every constructive comment has been realized or at least the mentioned flaw been otherwise erased.

make sure you check out fighting from the balconies. you can walk around the whole piazzetta jumping from one to the other.

i dont know whats wrong. i keep uploading it, but it does not show up. it is correctly packaged and zipped, i don't do this for the first time and know the guidelines.
strange...

This map is nice. The only thing I have to say is that it would be better if you could go inside the buildings.

thanks quatl. i decided to leave the buildings solid mainly for 2 reasons:

a) performance. the map has many many details that cost a lot of fps already, opening the buildings makes it even worse.

b) snipers. buildings that invite to walk through dont add much to the gameplay on which the map focuses. i dont want to create an incentive to sniper but rather the opposite: noobs, lern how to run, fight and win the struggles. :-)

but from a pure optical perspective it would be much nicer, i agree. its one of the major weaknesses i have to take to have it fun-to-play and not just to watch.

Hi schmutzwurst,
I couldn't expect anything less from the maker of one of my favorite maps: "Berlin Wall". :)
Being Italian, I'd say that the architecture looks more like Dutch/German (the church, especially) though this doesn't prevent this map being an excellent work of craftsmanship.

I find the gameplay amusing as expected, the jumppads are a nice touch and the theme seems a smaller follow-up of the popular "urban_c", with better textures/architecture. I only have two little remarks:

There are some dead-ends (I assume they are there on purpose) lowering down the fun: I'd find it nice to put some emergency ladders here and there, to give players an escape (and also a sniping point for "natural-born-assassins", but I know that's not the goal of your map, as you've already explained.)
Architecturally speaking, the underground part is what doesn't turn me on very much: teleports are a bit of a vicious circle, and I'd expect a tunnel at the end of the stairs, but that's just me, you know. ;)

A deserved 5/5, nevertheless.

thanks blindabuser, first for the compliment on berlin wall but for the rating and your useful comments too. and of course you are right: i mash up styles as usual. :-D the church is rather gothic-themed, which does exist in italy but is rather common in nothern europe. honestly i rather named it that way for the idea of such a lovely square which italy has a lot and my home country germany lacks seriously than for making you guys believe its italy. ;-)

the dead-end corners are "kind-of" on purpose. one (the one that you can access from the teleport in the phone booth) is for the cases that you hold the flag but the flag at your own base is gone. then you automatically look for a place where you can be only attacked from one side (except the teleport destination of course), which this dead end road offers. the other flagman has a similar place of "control" but its somewhat hidden and tricky to get up there. in instactf you have to take the jump between the two houses with the awnings and walk along the spur towards the dark wooden gangway. in ctf you can rocketjump it. nevertheless the ladder idea sounds good. i will keep that in mind. :-)

the map has a lot of teleports, because i want the people to be interested in the map even after a while of 1on1s. working with the advantages of the teleport usually takes you a while but males you superior. i do exactly know what you mean by vicious circle but the problem was that i didnt want them to shortcut the already short distance between the flags in any ctf mode. so i had to make them unattractive for this diagonal direction. but i will take a look at them too. if you have any specific idea to improve them and keep the distances for ctf-modes, let me know.

you are definitively right that i could pep up the undergroound a little more and i will do.

It's not anything to do with the map really, I mean, the lighting could perhaps be a little better (I don't think it does the architecture justice). On the aspects of this being a map designed for gameplay, I think it is a bit cramped for Sauerbraten's style. Too much to get stuck/caught on while traversing at breakneck speeds, or maybe I just suck.

Nonetheless, don't take offense, votes like mine get graded on a very steep slope as I compare them to every piece of content on Quadropolis, and there is some damn fine work out there, some of which only got four stars from me.

first; really thanks for letting me know. i dont really care how you rate, but your rate told me you have ideas of what to do better, which i'm always interested in. i just believe criticism usually makes you better if you listen to it and think about it. so, be sure: i don`t take offense. :-)

you are right, it is a bit narrow indeed. the same with "venice" by garcia. if you really open it up and make it wide its just not one of those italian-style squares anymore... nothing much you can do. especially now that its gotten so far. ;-) in instaCTF it seems just right, in ctf its gonna get messy, thats for sure. any places you got stuck that could be clipped and i just forgot or that you just get rid of to make it wider? I'll take a look.

the lighting has gone a lot of steps forth and back. I know what you mean. what kind of lighting would you put in there? woorking with small soft lights everywhere makes it look unrealistic. daylight-themes dont allow for much more than one daylight if its a town-map. ok, at least the lampposts could be gone (less to get stuck). but i already think about replacing them by fully no-clipped selfmade ones. there are some places in italy where they spotlight the housefronts at the square. i tried it but it didnt look well with the sauerbraten-spotlights. anyone with a good good lighting idea is is more than welcome. it should look realistic though, as the map kind of tries to be realistic ;-)

It is like "venice", and there isn't much you can do about that crampiness, I wouldn't say you need to change anything in that regard really - it is what it is and does what it is designed to do. I think where it does lose points for me is on the colours/theme/lighting.

While its Italian, I feel like I'm walking around dreary ol' England; perhaps brighten it up a little, and swap out some of the textures for better ones. Texturing and lighting is one of the hardest things to do right, and I'm no good at it myself - I usually fluke it and boast about how awesome it is when I don't know how I even pulled it off - so my advice is probably moot :P
