Detailed description

This is a smaller CTF map for Sauerbraten.
It is copied from Red Faction, there it's a very popular CTF map.
It's not like the original one, because it would be too fast for sauer.
I changed a texture of rorschach, so that there is the nice ctf red/blue schema.

Hope you like it! Have fun playing :P

If you find any mistakes i made or if you have any ideas to improve the gameplay it would be really nice if you can tell me :)
If anyone wants to test this map i'm up for, i really wanna test it so i know how good the gameplay is :P

you know opinion, i really like the map. the way through the middle is little too fast, but great fun and well done nevertheless!

I just turn on all shaders with max detail (i think) :P

I just noticed that there are still some bugs in the map, but don't fix them now, maybe in a few hours. (first bug, both bases have blue light and the light texture isnt' there...)

There's a bunch of small artistic stuff I'd change personally (add some wooden supports in the caves, put smoke particles above the torches, add mushrooms, etc), but you probably aren't interesting in that.

So. I noticed while goofing about that while you won't exactly get stuck in the geometry, things do get a bit questionable at times. I would go nuts with the clipping to avoid this. Nothing worse than getting that one second slowdown when you're running for your life with the flag, and consequently die.

Concerning the same geometry... given that most of the map has been deformed at gridsize 1, I'd go ahead and captialize on that. You're taking the performance hit anyways, so play up the curves, try and make those caves look natural! Also try and bevel out the top of the canyon, or at least put in some stuff to imply cliffy-ness.

Further on the canyon: it doesn't really make sense for the geometry to be deformed at gridsize 1 up there. Unless the level of detail is pretty high, bump it up a couple of notches, so that you can reduce your high visibility faces. That canyon, being the center of the map, should be as optimized as possible. Keep the details in the corners (and especially the caves, because they'll get occulled most of the time).

smoke particles -> i had some, but these weren't smoke(it was particles 8 :P) but i'll add smoke soon

I'm really interested in details, but i'm careful with details in this map, I reduced filesize from 3/3.5 MB to ~650KB and now it's again a bit bigger. I really like making details with geometry.

I don't really know what you mean with the caves. I used smaller gridsize but than the map was >3MB so i had to use bigger gridsizes all over the map and that took some time... :/

If you really wanna have natural caves i would use the smallest gridsize, but most players in sauer don't have a machine to run natural maps. Just have a look at the development of maps like berlin wall. Or have a look at relic, does it look natural. Well even river_c doesn't look that natural (more natural than some time ago :P) but i try my best to make it more natural etc.

well, we spoke about this map already (off quadropolis), so you know what I said then .. but the idea of the "shafts" (tunnels) in the canyon wall needing some wooden supports seems just too obvious once you've heard it - I second that .. maybe this would be an execellent time to find a mine-shaft-support-beam-model out there ;-) ... it'd make life a lot easier if you could just slap on some (even awkardly orientated) mapmodels .. instead of having to redo wooden beams via geometry (messing up your heightfields too, ..).

I wasn't terribly clear on my comment about the gridsize in the cave, allow me to clarify. The caves are done almost entirely in gridsize 1, correct? But almost none of those cubes have been deformed more than 3/8s of a cube, from what I can tell from a somewhat quick examination. A lot of those cubes could be deformed a bit more to make the walls and ceiling more bowed and curvy, without any change in performance whatsoever. Mathematically speaking, a set of 16 cubes that are 3/8s deformed have the exact same demands as a set of 16 cubes with 7/8 deformation. The only way to alter the outcome is to change the gridsize or push a cube 8/8s of the way, exposing a new cube, the the other faces of the neighboring cubes.

If there's interest in a wood support model I'll whip one up.

I think the problem with the wood support model would be that it doesn't fit everywhere in the caves

You could add some capture bases so the map also supports this mode. :)
And there is no /mapmsg but the default one.

The idea is actualy, pretty old so not original, but u made it original, by using light, geometry and textures :D.

theres a shaderbug in the support textures in the cave, maybe better 2 replace textures?

i think the gameplay would be nice here :D.

light and sound are cool to :D.

btw, very niec u can get at the other base to, by using twice a machine-grenade jump :D.

anways, nice map :D.
